Hydrogenated palm wax is produced by fully hydrogenating refined palm oil, saturating the remaining double bonds in its oleic and linoleic chains. It is supplied as flakes, pastilles or slabs, white to off-white and effectively odourless, and is normally ordered by melting band, with 42 to 44, 46 to 48, 48 to 50, 50 to 52 and 52 to 54 degrees Celsius all in regular use. Hydrogenation changes the physical character of the fat completely. Removing the double bonds allows the chains to pack into a tight, regular crystal lattice, which raises the melting point, hardens the material and makes it opaque. It also removes the sites where oxygen would attack, so the wax is highly resistant to rancidity and discolouration on storage, and it burns and sets without the odour a partially unsaturated fat would develop. The graded melting bands exist because the correct choice depends on the application: a container candle needs a wax that softens enough to adhere to glass, while a pillar must hold its own shape in a warm room. It is used in pillar, taper and container candles and candle blends, in wax coatings for packaging and confectionery glazes, and in cosmetics and personal care as a structuring wax.
