RBD Coconut Oil

About This Product
RBD coconut oil is pressed from the dried kernel, or copra, of the coconut palm Cocos nucifera, then refined, bleached and deodorised to remove free fatty acids, pigments and the coconut aroma. It carries CAS number 8001-31-8 and the INCI name Cocos Nucifera Oil. The result is a white solid below about 24 degrees Celsius that becomes a clear, essentially odourless liquid above it. Coconut oil is the archetypal lauric oil. Lauric acid, a twelve-carbon saturated chain, makes up roughly 45 to 52 percent of its fatty acids, with myristic, palmitic, caprylic and capric acids making up most of the rest. More than 90 percent of the fat is saturated, which is why it has a very low iodine value, typically 6 to 11, and a very high saponification value of 250 to 264. Practically, saturation means almost no double bonds for oxygen to attack, so the oil has outstanding oxidative stability and a long shelf life. The short, uniform chain length also gives it a narrow melting range rather than a gradual softening. In food it is used in confectionery coatings, biscuit creams, non-dairy creamers, dairy alternatives and spray oils where a clean flavour and sharp melt are needed. In personal care and industry, its lauric content makes it a primary feedstock for soap, where it gives quick, high lather, and for fatty alcohols and surfactants. Bio Green Oils and Fats supplies RBD coconut oil to specification on free fatty acid, peroxide value, moisture, colour, iodine value and melting point.
